Fish and Foodies

Epic heroes seemed to avoid fish, preferring red meat, and Plato observed that the consumption of fish is missing from the Iliad (Republic 404b–405a). In addition, Odysseus’ crew were unable to sate their hunger when they languished for a month on Helios’ Island when the winds did not blow (Odyssey 12.331–334), and they seemed to prefer beef. Aristarchus argued that Odysseus’ men ate fish only under duress.19 Fish, nonetheless, was a popular protein among the Greeks. The Rhodian dogfish (a type of shark), came highly recommended: “if they won’t sell it to you, take it by force!” so declared Archestratus, a Greek poet from Gela of Syracuse.20 Boarfish from the Ambracian Gulf was also prized:
